Sioux City True Crime Files
Wed. Oct. 29
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Although it may seem like violent crimes and horrific homicides have been more prevalent in recent decades and occur most often in major cities, that's not always true. Sioux City has seen its fair share of crime and murder, dating back to the late 1800s. In recent years, society has exploded with heightened levels of interest in the genre of true crime. Humans are naturally drawn to and have a morbid curiosity when it comes to tales that are "stranger than fiction." Sarah Enright, Local History Librarian Specialist at the Sioux City Public Library and a true crime fan herself, uses the library's resources, such as archived newspaper clippings, microfilm, databases, and web resources, to construct detailed narratives of local cases. This session will spotlight several historical cases. Attendees will be encouraged to share memories, theories, and comments as the cases are discussed.

Rock Around the Clock: Re-creating a Night on the Radio - New Year's Eve, 1963
Thu. Nov. 06
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Join Russ Gifford and step into the time machine – the destination – New Year's Eve, 1963! We'll relive the hits from 1960 to 1963 to remember the 'second wave' of Rock n' Roll! This session is dedicated to the people that kept Rock n' Roll alive after the people that broke down the door in the 1950s had largely left the stage!
We will remember Rock's forgotten years before the Beatles arrived. We will spend time with teenage troubadours, folk minstrels, and girl groups galore! From Dion to the Shirelles, Bobby Vee to the Chiffons, and Gene Chandler to the Angels! Roy Orbison and Ricky Nelson! Ray Charles,
Chubby Checker, and let's not forget Dee Clark!
The record companies were pushing hard to create a new Elvis - forgetting that Elvis was ready and willing to take back the stage! Yet something new sounding like something gold were Peter, Paul, and Mary spinning tales, leading the rising folk groups that were making their way up the charts and into your hearts! We won't overlook the singers that weren't Rock - but dominated the airwaves anyway! Marty Robbins, anyone? Jimmy Dean? Johnny Horton? All had their moment on the dial during these great years! Join me to hear the doo wop dreamers and all the screamers! This is the History of Rock, Part 2: 1960 to 1963.

Don't Know Much About The U.S. Constitution
Mon. Nov. 17
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: The emphasis in this discussion is on the document itself. What DOES it say? Traditionally, when talking about the Constitution, we spend our time telling the stories of the creation, the changes from the Articles of Confederation, and the compromises necessary to finally agree on a Constitution. These stories are important, and enlightening, and as intended, uplifting. It is an amazing achievement and has survived those who would destroy it for over 200 years. When we were young, it was said the reason the United States led the world was because the Constitution was a 'living document' and could change with the times. Ironically, though, since 1980 the discussions and arguments focus on the Founders' original intent. For example - for more than two decades - during the time of the Founders - the idea of using Federal government money for transportation projects was deemed totally outside the scope of the Constitution. And yet, if each state is a supreme power to itself - how do you build a bridge between two states? How does the Railroad get built? Or the Interstate system? This session will explore what is and what is not written into the Constitution. This time we will see not only the original reasoning, but the CHANGES as the times changed - and the results.
