Western Iowa Tech Community College would like to kindly remind all event attendees to be familiar with and abide by all established Western Iowa Tech Commencement event protocols, to ensure a smooth and enjoyable event for Western Iowa Tech Graduates and all attendees.

Attendee Decorum & Expectations

We kindly ask attendees of this event to be courteous to those around them and abide by building and event guidelines.  Attendees using foul or abusive language, behaving in an unruly manner, or appearing intoxicated are subject to ejection and/or arrest.

Tyson Event Center Metal Detector Screening of Attendees

Walk-through metal detectors will be utilized and staffed by the Tyson Events Center. Cell Phones, keys, and RFID wallets will need to be removed and placed in a bowl before walking through the metal detectors. All bags and persons are subject to search upon entry. Any person refusing search will not be admitted into the facility. These procedures are not a response to any specific threat, but rather to provide a safe and secure environment for guests with recommendations by national and local law enforcement officials. 

Tyson Event Center Clear Bag Protocol

  • Clear bags are required to enter the facilities for all events. Clear bags may not exceed 12" x 12" x 6" inches in size.
  • Non-clear small wallets, clutches, wristlets, fanny packs, etc. Are permitted if they do not exceed 7.5" x 5" inches and are subject to search.
  • Limit one bag per person.
  • Diaper bags or other medically necessary bags are permitted and will be subject to search.
  • Guests will be asked to remove from their clothing and belongings, any items that may trigger the alarm, including cell phones and keys, before they pass through the metal detector units.
  • All bags are subject to search.
  • If the metal detector alarm sounds, you will be subject to a secondary screening which may slow your entry into the venue.
  • Prohibited Activity:
  • All event attendees are expected to refrain from the following prohibited activities:
  • Unruly, threatening, disruptive, or illegal behavior that may disrupt the ceremony is prohibited. Any individual violating this rule will be escorted from the event.
  • Unauthorized or unlawful demonstrations or actions that create a negative tone, detract from, or interfere with the event are prohibited. Persons responsible will be escorted from the event. 
  • The distribution of promotional items, handbills, flyers, pamphlets, printed materials, as well as the solicitation of signatures, is not permitted on Tyson Events Center property without prior written authorization.

Prohibited Items

The following items are prohibited. Attendees found to be in possession of these items will be denied entry to the event.

  • Flags, Banners, Posters and Signs are prohibited.
  • Balloons
  • Alcohol, drugs, illegal substances, or any paraphernalia associated with drug use.
  • Animals (except certified service animals)
  • Cans, bottles, coolers, or other similar containers
  • Electronic cigarettes / vape pens inside facility.
  • Fireworks
  • Laser pens/pointers of any type
  • Noisemakers such as air horns
  • Outside food or beverages
  • Oversized bags, backpacks, duffel bag
  • Pepper spray/Mace
  • Weapons of any type, including chains, knives, firearms, and spiked jewelry (including permit to carry)
  • Any other item deemed unacceptable by event/building management.
  • If an item is revealed during a search, patrons may dispose of the item, or return the item to their vehicle. The Tyson Events Center does not safeguard any personal belongings or items of any type.

Emergency Response

In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and walk to the nearest exit in an orderly fashion. Follow posted signs and listen to announcements for specific instructions. In some circumstances you will be directed to remain in the building and staff will direct you where to go. Please do not use elevators. If you are disabled, trained staff members will assist you in getting to safety.

Communication to attendees

Tyson Event Center Staff will make any necessary safety and security announcements over the PA system, to direct attendees regarding safety procedures. 

Injury & First Aid Response

Please contact Tyson Events Center event staff if you or someone you are with has been injured. Event staff can call on-site paramedics or will contact management if further treatment is needed. The First Aid Station at Tyson Events Center is located on the main concourse behind section 111.
