Comet CLASS, formally known as Student Senate, represents Cultivating Leadership, Advocacy, and Student Success. Students may apply to become a Comet CLASS leader or may be nominated by a staff or faculty member. Students selected for Comet CLASS are expected to actively participate in campus meetings and events, maintain good academic standing, and represent numerous programs and student populations.
Cultivating Leadership
Students participating in Comet CLASS receive personalized leadership development which allows them to identify the strengths that make them unique, articulate what they do best, and build confidence which encourages them to show up authentically. These skills are cultivated through leadership curriculum, the Gallup Clifton Strengthsfinder program, leadership conferences, and guest speakers.
Advocacy
Comet CLASS members are encouraged to be community and campus advocates. Our Western Iowa Tech student leaders develop these advocacy skills through hosting student listening sessions, community and campus service, and participation in campus committees such as Academic Council and the Student Support Council. Our Comet CLASS members additionally support our current and prospective students by assisting with student activities and recruiting events.
Student Success
Western Iowa Tech student leaders actively participate in the pursuit of student success by creating a community of belonging and inclusion. Comet CLASS leaders are asked to attend at least one inclusion event per semester and meet bi-weekly for collaboration meetings and leadership lunches. Collaboration meetings are held one Friday a month from 9am - 12pm, while leadership lunches are held one Friday a month from 11:30am - 1pm. This group seeks to encourage each other and fellow classmates through social activities, events, and weekly check-ins.
