Don't Know Much About: Iowa's Amana Colonies
Mon. Apr. 21
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: In 19th century America, many communal societies formed, but only a few remain. One in Iowa, the Amana Colonies, consists of a group of seven interdependent communities known for the appliance industry they founded – and their industrious population. Their heritage is on display, and they bask in the attention given to their homestyle meals, brewhouse beer, and durable and delightful furniture. While the emphasis is on small-town rural life, their name and fame attract more than a million people a year to visit their delightful homes. But the question remains: Who created the Amana Colonies, and what were their goals? What were their beliefs and their practices? When did things change, and why? How did they become famous for the manufacture of appliances? What is their structure today? These are the
questions Russ Gifford will explore as we look at the history and the heritage of the Amana Colonies.

America's Unknown Superfruit: The Aronia Berry
Wed. Apr. 30
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Aronia berries are native to North America and were used by Native Americans for centuries to treat colds and flu and even to preserve meats. Yet today, very few Americans have even heard of them, and most of today's commercial production comes out of Eastern Europe. If you are trying to eat healthier foods, consider that aronia berries have more antioxidants than blueberries, elderberries, strawberries, or even açai berries. These berries are tops in anthocyanins, quercetins, catechins, phenolic acids, and even resveratrol, all molecules with proven health benefits. They're also high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, yet low in sugars. Join Dr. DuVal, a retired chemist and local grower of aronia berries, as he discusses the berries, their chemistries, and potential health benefits. Food products containing aronia berries will be available for sampling.

Dr. Robert E. Dunker Leadership Series
Mon. May. 05
-Mon. May. 12
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: The Robert E. Dunker Leadership Lectures examine and discuss examples of leadership displayed in life by prominent people in America, both nationally and locally. This series is sponsored by and named in honor of Dr. Robert E. Dunker, President Emeritus of Western Iowa Tech Community College, founder of The Institute for Lifelong Learning, and one of Western Iowa Tech's earliest graduates. This series is about people whose actions have impacted the world. These individuals made national news with perseverance, persistence, and sacrifice. Today the reason behind their fame is obscured by the results. We know they succeeded or failed. How can we learn from their example if we don't know what they did or why they did it? Historian Russ Gifford will introduce us to the person behind the headlines, their motives, their methods, and what traits allowed them to exercise leadership and achieve their fame.
Sacagawea - Explorer, Adventurer - and Mother?
In this session, Russ Gifford will seek to uncover the truth of the remarkable 16-year-old youth who played a pivotal role in the journey that, two centuries later, still commands our attention - and our admiration. We will also try to see her viewpoint as they crossed back into the region of her birth, and the amazing twist to the story that likely saved the enterprise from disaster.
Bill Turner - TV Pioneer
Join Russ Gifford as we remember a force of nature in the guise of Bill Turner. We will try to see past the outsized personality and sometimes irritating manners to discover the legacy William Turner left Siouxland, both good and bad. I will also see if anyone since Bill has met the high goal he set for the broadcast industry.

"The disappearance of a local politician's teenage daughter is major news in Minnesota. As a huge manhunt is launched to find her, Cork O'Connor's grandson stumbles across the shallow grave of a young Ojibwe woman--but nobody seems that interested. Nobody, that is, except Cork and the newly formed Iron Lake Ojibwe Tribal Police. As Cork and the tribal officers dig into the circumstances of this mysterious and grim discovery, they uncover a connection to the missing teenager. And soon, it's clear that Cork's grandson is in danger of being the killer's next victim in this white-knuckled mystery from "a master storyteller at the top of his game" (Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author)."

Rock Around the Clock
Thu. May. 15
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: W108
Description: Remember how the DJs would spend New Year's Eve counting down the previous year's hits, counting them down to midnight? Join Russ Gifford as he recreates that vibe for you with a countdown of the first five years of rock and roll, as seen in 1959. Spend two hours reliving the early years of Rock n' Roll - just as we did then – listening to the radio late into the night. We'll remember the people, the stories, and most importantly, the sounds of the fabulous Fifties. With all the hits and perhaps a few misses, we'll trace the rise of rock in a blazing trail for radio waves bouncing off the ionosphere...Along the way, we will hear from Little Richard, Don & Phil Everly, Ricky Nelson, and as many others as we can cram into two hours. Plus, we'll survey the hot gal groups and doo-wop dreamers. Join Russ Gifford as he counts down the hits of the 1950s.

Description: When you see horses standing in a pasture or running across a field, does your heart beat a little faster? Do you long to touch them and understand them? Whether you have grown up with horses or admired them from afar, this course will help you understand them and become a
part of their world. Learning to Communicate with Horses is a non-riding horse class for adults 50 and over who have always wanted to be able to approach these magnificent creatures without fear and be accepted by them. This class will teach you the proper way to interact with a horse. You will be rewarded with a silky muzzle, a warm breath, and a deep feeling of serenity as you join with the spirit of a horse. You will learn how these graceful animals communicate with each other and with us, how to bond with them through activities, and how they can help us heal from loss
and trauma. At the end of the workshop, you will have gained the confidence and knowledge that will allow you to understand and enjoy the special relationship between a person and a horse. The next step is our Silver Saddles class, which will help you to see the world from a totally different perspective, from the back of a horse. Classes are held at the STARS Riding Center just 1 1?2 miles north of Mike's Saloon on Hamilton Boulevard. Please dress comfortably (close-toed shoes please) in layers. -Wed. Jun. 18
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: STARS Riding Center, 33148 K-22 (1 1?2 miles north of Mike's Saloon)
Description: "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man," noted Winston Churchill. This statement is never truer than at the Special Troopers Adaptive Riding School (STARS) located in Sioux City. The PATH certified staff at STARS has created a program designed for Lifelong Learning members over 50 who want to connect or reconnect with horses and get some exercise. The Silver Saddles program will provide you with a deeper understanding of horses, teach you how to move safely around them, and develop elementary riding skills.
The STARS staff has a great deal of experience working with individuals with little or no previous interaction with horses. You will learn how to bond with and feed horses. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a gentle ride. Similar programs around the country have found that seniors can improve balance, flexibility, and endurance as a result of this kind of activity. There are also psychological benefits, such as developing a sense of meaning, promoting social connections, and acquiring a sense of accomplishment.

Honor Flight Experience with Midwest Honor Flight
Thu. May. 29
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: The Honor Flight Network is a national nonprofit organization comprised of nearly 130 independent hubs working together to achieve the Honor Flight mission. Locally, the Midwest Honor Flight serves Veterans from Northwest Iowa, the State of
South Dakota, Northeast Nebraska, and Southwest Minnesota, bringing them to Washington, D.C. at no cost to the Veteran. Their mission: to transport America's Veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and to fellow Veterans. They've flown 23 flights since inception, flying nearly 2,000,
with five more flights planned in 2025 including one from Sioux City, possibly in the spring of 2025. These flights are entirely funded by donations, with no government funding involved. While initially focused only on America's World War II Veterans, Honor Flight Network now also includes those who served in the military during the Korean and Vietnam War eras, along with veterans of any service era who are critically ill. Top priority is given to World War II and terminally ill Veterans. In order for Midwest Honor Flight to achieve this goal, Guardians fly with the Veterans on every flight, providing assistance and helping Veterans have a safe, memorable, and rewarding experience.
