February Book Club
Wed. Feb. 05
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Location: L110
Description: When Winter Came: A Country Doctor's Journey to Fight the Flu Pandemic of 1918 By Mary Beth Sarton Obermeyer
"Dr. Pierre Sartor wrote an inspiring first-person account of how he treated more than 1,000 patients – and by his
reckoning, lost only five – which lay forgotten in a lockbox of family artifacts until it was discovered decades later
by his granddaughter, Beth Obermeyer, a journalist and author of three previous books. Beth knew her grandfather
through her teenage years and grew up absorbing family stories. Based upon Dr. Sartor's memoir and her years of
research, she vividly reconstructs his life from childhood in Luxembourg, where he overcame a debilitating hearing problem, to medical school in Chicago, courtship and marriage...Beth's story is rooted in a certain time and place. Yet it
speaks across generations to the qualities that make a compassionate, skilled physician – a compelling example of doing the best of things in the worst of times. Because, when winter comes, we all want a doctor like Pierre Sartor."

Robert Frost: Iconic American Poet
Mon. Mar. 03
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: L304
Description: Robert Frost is probably one of the most well-known and beloved American poets of modern times and maybe of all time. Let's take a look at his life, his development as a poet, his works, and how his legacy lives on today. Even those who have no particular interest in poetry may be familiar with lines and images popularized by Frost. "Good Fences make Good Neighbors." "The Road Not Taken." "I Have Promises to Keep and Miles to Go Before I Sleep." "Some Say the World Will End by Fire, Some by Ice." Most people can at least identify Robert Frost as a poet. How many poets writing today do you think the average American can name? Frost lived from 1874 to 1963, and is most closely associated with New England. His life and journey as a poet took him to other parts of the country and the world. He was out of step with some of the trends in poetry of his time and
first came to fame in England. Much honored in his lifetime, he received four Pulitzer Prizes in poetry and was awarded the Congressional Gold
Medal. He was named the Poet Laureate of Vermont. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize 31 times but never won. He is also well-known for reading a poem at John F. Kennedy's inauguration. Why was it such a struggle for Frost to gain attention in the United States? He was 41 before his first book of poetry was published in the US. How did someone born in San Francisco come to be so closely associated with New England? What was his reception with critics and poets of his time? What is his legacy and how is he regarded today? How did his personal life influence his work?
Bill McKenny, a frequent Life-Long Learning presenter and retired English teacher, will help us look at these and other questions as we explore this popular poet.

Description: The Women: A Novel By Kristin Hannah
"'Women can be heroes.' When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances "Frankie" McGrath hears these words, it
is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path...The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm's way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era."

Sioux City True Crime Files
Thu. Mar. 06
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Description: Although it may seem like violent crimes and horrific
homicides have been more prevalent in recent decades
and occur most often in major cities, that's not always
true. Sioux City has seen its fair share of crime and mur-
der, dating back to the late 1800s. In recent years, society
has exploded with heightened levels of interest in the
genre of true crime. Humans are naturally drawn to
and have a morbid curiosity when it comes to tales that
are "stranger than fiction." Sarah Enright, Local History
Librarian Specialist at the Sioux City Public Library and a
true crime fan herself, uses the library's resources, such as
archived newspaper clippings, microfilm, databases, and
web resources, to construct detailed narratives of local
cases. This session will spotlight several historical cases
that were never solved. Attendees will be encouraged to
share memories, theories, and comments as the cases are
discussed.

The Private Detective: Lew Archer
Mon. Mar. 17
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Sam Spade. Philip Marlowe. Nero Wolfe. All of the Private Eyes we have discussed so far had instant name recogni- tion, even if you had not read their books. But Lew Archer? Not so much. And yet, the Lew Archer series of books obviously reached beyond the mystery genre to mainstream interest. After a solid and skilled 1950s, with the 1960s, author Ross Macdonald would reach the New York Times' Bestseller lists precisely because the stories meshed well with the era. And he did it again in the 1970s before his death. As we read these books, we learn why Lew Archer and his creator, Ross Macdonald are the perfect choice for our look at the actual society of the times as mirrored by their books. Macdonald's books embrace a style that combines the feeling of his times but is told by an observer who tries desperately to remain impartial. Yet Archer not only sees the grimy touches of the murder room's dirty paint job but also adds the vivid colors of the sundown. The result is a fresh look at the grim reality of an era, seen through tired eyes. Archer is a detective who wants to believe there is still good to be found – but his experiences say otherwise. In that, we come to realize he is all too-accurately capturing the feelings of many as the calendar changed from the 1960s to the 1970s. Join Russ Gifford as we examine the history of Lew Archer and the events that brought his books to the bestseller list.

RICHARDSONIAN ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE IN SIOUX CITY
Wed. Mar. 19
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Richardsonian Romanesque is identified by its round
arches, turrets and towers, steep rooflines, and roughly
cut masonry. Brought to the public's eye by the influential
Henry Hobson Richardson, his styles caught like wildfire
in the small towns and large cities of the American West
in the late 19th century. Many architects in Sioux City
practiced this style on some of the city's well-known build-
ings, such as the Peirce Mansion, St. Thomas Episcopal
Church, and the Evans Block on Historic Fourth Street.
Presenter Tom Munson, the Museum's Archives Manager,
will explore how Boston-based Richardson's unique style
impacted Sioux City's development.

LOOKING FOR CLUES: INVESTIGATING THE FBI By Russ Gifford
Mon. Mar. 31
-Sun. Mar. 30
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: From Anarchists to Gangsters, Commies to Radicals, Kidnappers to Killers – the FBI pursued them all. The Bureau watchmen have been on the job for more than 100 years now. Born in the aftermath of the assassination of William McKinley, created by his successor, the Bureau answered to the Attorney General and investigated for the Justice Department. Originally, Theodore Roosevelt expected them to share the Secret Service men, but the Treasury Department intervened. But if someone thought they would wither and die, they were shocked. The Bureau would become a major organization after bomb explosions shattered the peace in New York and near Washington, D.C. in September of 1920. The Red Scare was on. The Bureau of Investigation, and its new assistant manager, J. Edgar Hoover, was quick to respond to the call. Hoover's gift for reading the political tides – and gathering headlines - would see him in power for decades. He pursued high-profile gangsters – often ending in public shootouts. While they gunned down gangsters in the 1920s and 1930s, his first love was the FBI's original mission – tracking foreign agents he saw as dangerous to the country. He would cultivate connections in movies and television to see the story of the FBI was told by his standards...We will track the results of the Hoover era, and how the agency became the organization it is in the 21st century.

Description: Joe Nuthin's Guide to Life By Helen Fisher
"Joe-Nathan likes the two parts of his name separate, just like dinner and dessert. Mean Charlie at work sometimes calls him Joe-Nuthin. But Joe is far from nothing. Joe is a good friend, good at his job, good at making things and at following rules, and he is learning how to do lots of things by himself. Joe's mother knows there are a million things he isn't yet prepared for. While she helps to guide him every day, she is also writing notebooks of advice for Joe, of all the things she hasn't yet told him about life and things he might forget. By following her advice, Joe's life is about to be more of a surprise than he expects. Because he's about to learn that remarkable things can happen when you leave your comfort zone, and that you can do even the hardest things with a little help from your friends." DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT: IOWA'S AMANA COLONIES By Russ Gifford
Mon. Apr. 21
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: In 19th century America, many communal societies formed, but only a few remain. One in Iowa, the Amana Colonies, consists of a group of seven interdependent communities known for the appliance industry they founded – and their industrious population. Their heritage is on display, and they bask in the attention given to their homestyle meals, brewhouse beer, and durable and delightful furniture. While the emphasis is on small-town rural life, their name and fame attract more than a million people a year to visit their delightful homes. But the question remains: Who created the Amana Colonies, and what were their goals? What were their beliefs and their practices? When did things change, and why? How did they become famous for the manufacture of appliances? What is their structure today? These are the
questions Russ Gifford will explore as we look at the history and the heritage of the Amana Colonies.

AMERICA'S UNKNOWN SUPERFRUIT: THE ARONIA BERRY
Wed. Apr. 30
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Aronia berries are native to North America and were used by Native Americans for centuries to treat colds and flu and even to preserve meats. Yet today, very few Americans have even heard of them, and most of today's commercial production comes out of Eastern Europe. If you are trying to eat healthier foods, consider that aronia berries have more antioxidants than blueberries, elderberries, strawberries, or even açai berries. These berries are tops in anthocyanins, quercetins, catechins, phenolic acids, and even resveratrol, all molecules with proven health benefits. They're also high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, yet low in sugars. Join Dr. DuVal, a retired chemist and local grower of aronia berries, as he discusses the berries, their chemistries, and potential health benefits. Food products containing aronia berries will be available for sampling.

DR. ROBERT E. DUNKER LEADERSHIP SERIES By Russ Gifford
Mon. May. 05
-Mon. May. 12
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: The Robert E. Dunker Leadership Lectures examine and discuss examples of leadership displayed in life by prominent people in America, both nationally and locally. This series is sponsored by and named in honor of Dr. Robert E. Dunker, President Emeritus of Western Iowa Tech Community College, founder of The Institute for Lifelong Learning, and one of Western Iowa Tech's earliest graduates. This series is about people whose actions have impacted the world. These individuals made national news with perseverance, persistence, and sacrifice. Today the reason behind their fame is obscured by the results. We know they succeeded or failed. How can we learn from their example if we don't know what they did or why they did it? Historian Russ Gifford will introduce us to the person behind the headlines, their motives, their methods, and what traits allowed them to exercise leadership and achieve their fame.
Sacagawea - Explorer, Adventurer - and Mother?
In this session, Russ Gifford will seek to uncover the truth of the remarkable 16-year-old youth who played a pivotal role in the journey that, two centuries later, still commands our attention - and our admiration. We will also try to see her viewpoint as they crossed back into the region of her birth, and the amazing twist to the story that likely saved the enterprise from disaster.
Bill Turner - TV Pioneer
Join Russ Gifford as we remember a force of nature in the guise of Bill Turner. We will try to see past the outsized personality and sometimes irritating manners to discover the legacy William Turner left Siouxland, both good and bad. I will also see if anyone since Bill has met the high goal he set for the broadcast industry.

"The disappearance of a local politician's teenage daughter is major news in Minnesota. Nobody, that is, except Cork and the newly formed Iron Lake Ojibwe Tribal Police. As Cork and the tribal officers dig into the circumstances of this mysterious and grim discovery, they uncover a connection to the missing teenager. And soon, it's clear that Cork's grandson is in danger of being the killer's next victim in this white-knuckled mystery from "a master storyteller at the top of his game" (Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author)."

Location: STARS Riding Center, 33148 K-22 (1 1?2 miles north of Mike's Saloon)
Description: "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man," noted Winston Churchill. This statement is never truer than at the Special Troopers Adaptive Riding School (STARS) located in Sioux City. The PATH certified staff at STARS has created a program designed for Lifelong Learning members over 50 who want to connect or reconnect with horses and get some exercise. The Silver Saddles program will provide you with a deeper understanding of horses, teach you how to move safely around them, and develop elementary riding skills.
The STARS staff has a great deal of experience working with individuals with little or no previous interaction with horses. You will learn how to bond with and feed horses. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a gentle ride. Similar programs around the country have found that seniors can improve balance, flexibility, and endurance as a result of this kind of activity.
